Our Principles

The Museum of Protest is devoted to preserving, interpreting, and fostering public engagement with the global history and multifaceted dimensions of protest, civil disobedience, resistance, and social movements.

We seek to honor the bravery and sacrifice of countless individuals who have raised their voices for justice, equality, and change.

  1. Respect for diversity of opinions: We are committed to presenting a wide range of views, recognizing that protest takes many forms and is driven by varied motivations. We feature exhibitions that embody different perspectives from around the world and across time.
  2. Promotion of dialogue: We believe that the understanding and resolution of complex societal issues require open and respectful dialogue. We encourage our visitors to engage with our exhibitions critically, fostering conversation and promoting the exchange of ideas. The most important items you see in our collection may be the ones that you do not agree with.
  3. Empowerment through education: We strive to educate our audience about the history and tactics of protest, the context in which they arise, and the change they can engender. We aim to equip visitors with knowledge to make informed opinions and take thoughtful actions.
  4. Commitment to accuracy: We prioritize the highest standards of historical accuracy and scholarly rigor. We recognize that our role is not to take sides, but to present facts, allowing our visitors to form their own interpretations and conclusions.
  5. Advocacy for peaceful protest: While we acknowledge the diversity of protest forms, we are strong advocates for peaceful, non-violent methods. We believe in the power of peaceful protest to effect meaningful, lasting change and respect for the rights and safety of all involved.
  6. Respect for human rights: We believe in the universality of human rights. We stand for freedom of speech, assembly, and association, and we strive to illustrate the pivotal role protest plays in defending these rights.
  7. Acknowledgment of the ongoing nature of protest: We understand that protest is an ongoing process. Today’s protests are tomorrow’s history, and we commit to dynamically updating our collections and narratives to reflect the ever-evolving nature of protest movements.
  8. Sustainability and accessibility: We aim to ensure that our institution is sustainable and accessible to all. We will strive to minimize our environmental impact and will work tirelessly to ensure our exhibitions and programs are inclusive and accessible to diverse audiences, irrespective of their physical ability, socio-economic status, or cultural background.

Our mission is not just to celebrate the history of protest, but also to inspire future generations to actively participate in shaping a more equitable and just society. We stand for education, dialogue, diversity, and empowerment. We stand with all who dare to raise their voices for what they believe in.
